I am speaking from a place of passion and personal experience. My dream has always been to own a farm, not just to make a living, but to serve the community by providing food for those less fortunate. Eventually, this dream became a reality, but not in the way you might think. I chose to start a vertical farm, an innovative form of farming that allows for greater crop yield in smaller spaces, especially critical in overpopulated areas. However, despite its advantages, vertical farming is overlooked by the New Jersey Farmland Assessment law. This law is predicated on the outdated notion of farmland which considers only traditional farming for tax benefits with a minimum of 5 acres requirement.

Vertical farming, despite being relatively new, has proved significantly more efficient than traditional farming, with the capability to grow 20 times more crops per acre and three times faster due to technologies such as aeroponics and hydroponics. Despite this, the law does not recognize vertical farms, especially the ones under 5 acres, for tax benefits, thereby disadvantaging those of us who adopt this sustainable agricultural practice.

The Farmland Assessment Law is in serious need of modernization. Vertical farming is the future of agriculture and it's time that it is recognized as such by the laws that govern us. The law should consider the number of crops produced, not merely the acreage taken, when granting tax breaks. It's time to adapt the tax laws to match the shifting paradigms in farming. I request your support in urging the New Jersey legislature to review and adapt the Farmland Assessment Law in line with our contemporary reality. Help us make farming fair again in New Jersey.
