The Issue

I've experienced the many benefits of owning chickens firsthand. My chickens supply my household with fresh, healthy food while allowing me to live more sustainably. They compost about 90% of my food waste, turning scraps that would otherwise go to the landfill into valuable fertilizer that nourishes my yard and garden. They also help control insects naturally and keep my lawn healthy without chemicals.

Unfortunately, current ordinances in Escanaba prevent many residents from experiencing these same benefits. Allowing homeowners to responsibly own and care for backyard chickens would promote sustainability, strengthen our local food system, and empower families to live more self-sufficiently.

There are numerous success stories from cities across the nation where ordinances have been updated to permit backyard chickens. Cities such as Marquette, Michigan, and Grand Rapids,  Michigan, have implemented regulations that balance the desires of chicken owners with neighborhood standards, offering a model for our community. These ordinances typically include guidelines on the maximum number of hens, distance requirements from neighbors, and proper management practices to ensure that chickens are kept healthy and do not become a nuisance.

The benefits of allowing backyard chickens extend beyond individual households. Chickens are incredible partners in reducing waste, as they consume food scraps and produce nutrient-rich manure, decreasing the community's overall environmental footprint. Moreover, fresh eggs from backyard chickens are healthier, more nutritious, and have a smaller carbon footprint compared to commercially produced eggs.

By amending city ordinances to permit backyard chickens, we can foster a more sustainable and community-oriented environment in Escanaba. This change would not only allow residents to take control of their food sources but also enhance the quality of life for everyone in our city.

Please join me in urging the City of Escanaba to update local ordinances to allow backyard chickens. Together, we can make our community more sustainable and self-sufficient. Sign this petition to show your support and help create a more vibrant and resilient Escanaba.
