The Issue

Please sign our Petition to improve safety at this dangerous footpath with a ‘blind bend’  running between Portland Road/Hippodrome Mews and  Walmer Road. The footpath is a primary walking route to access Avondale Park, the local primary schools, the Rugby Portobello social club and Kensington Leisure Centre.

UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 2024

As a separate issue, we won a NCIL award for planting for £15,000. The crazy paving has been taken out and planting will be placed in here in the next few weeks.

After 10 years of being petitioned, in August 2024 RBKC has started to improve this dangerous blind bend. As an interim measure they have slightly widened the curved footpath, and put up some ‘no cycling’ signs and bollards. But this only helps a little to reduce collisions between pedestrians and inappropriate footpath users like bikes, motorbikes Electric Scooters etc

What we want RBKC to do ASAP now is to add a new separate route for cyclists  separated from the pedestrian footpath by what was the triangular crazy paved area (dug up in August 2024 by RBKC to be replaced by planting). Foundations for this cycle route are already in place, as could be seen when the groundworks were done in August 2024. Old maps also show a pre-existing  tarmac road where the steps and paved area leading to them are now.

This proposal is a simplified version of a proposal agreed by RBKC several years ago, and is supported by local residents, our local councillor, local schools, the Kensington Society, our recently elected MP, Police, and other local organisations.

BACKGROUND

This footpath is intended for pedestrians but currently is used inappropriately by cyclists, motorbikes, electric scooters. skateboarders and pedestrians. The footpath forms a ‘blind bend’ and so pedestrians cannot see cyclists, motorcyclists or others coming at speed in the opposite direction, making it very dangerous for pedestrians. There have been many collisions and near collisions.

The footpath is a primary walking route to access Avondale Park, the local primary schools, the Rugby Portobello social club and Kensington Leisure Centre.
