The Issue

As someone who runs a pet search and rescue, and is actively involved in animal rights activism, it is heartbreaking to witness how the current legislation in British Columbia fails to recognize animals as sentient beings. This is shocking and largely outdated, considering scientific consensus that animals, much like humans, can feel, perceive, and respond to sensations, with the ability to experience emotions and cognitive abilities.

Existing laws predominantly view animals as property, which trivializes the rich emotional and perceptual life they lead. Creatures capable of perceiving sensations such as sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, and more importantly, of feeling pain, surely deserve more empathy and respect in the eyes of the law.

We are now calling on lawmakers of British Columbia to rewrite the laws around animal cruelty. These laws must accurately reflect current understandings of animal sentience. Taking such a step will not only benefit our furry friends but also result in a society that values empathy and compassion over property rights.

Let's amplify the voice of those who cannot speak for themselves and push for a world where no animal is seen merely as property. Sign this petition today to stand up against animal cruelty, and urge the authorities to see animals as sentient beings.
