Update : Access to Stanmore Sainsburys Disabled Toilet now provided - with thanks

The Issue

I am very glad to share an update and good news regarding access to Stanmore Sainsbury's Disabled Toilet.

Michelle Metcalfe | Executive Office has confirmed that the Stanmore store manager will ensure all colleagues are aware in an emergency situation, access to the disabled toilet facility, is to be given

Great thanks to Maureen Adams for collating in person signatures, the over 800 people that supported the On-Line petition, Bob Blackman for looking into the matter, Head Office and Stanmore Sainsburys for granting this community request

Regrettably, a decision to close off the toilets at the Sainsbury's in Stanmore has been taken

The toilets are still accessible for staff via a key

If you or a loved one has ever been grateful to find a loo whilst supermarket shopping please sign and share this petition

This issue is deeply personal and significant to me, as I have experienced the difficulty posed by the recent closure of the toilet facility first hand at Stanmore’s Sainsbury.

Frequently, residents and shoppers, particularly the disabled, elderly and families with young children, find themselves in dire need of a functioning toilet.

In light of this, given that there are functioning toilets already in place - could Sainsbury's Head Office commit to at least providing a key on request for emergency use.

This will be a step towards ensuring basic sanitary rights for any one in need

A recent study suggested that 30 percent of UK supermarket customers are in need of toilet facilities during their shopping trip (Source: UK Supermarket Survey 2020).

Given the sizeable percentage of customers affected, this small but significant change can drastically improve the shopping experience.

'A toilet is a very basic need. Sainsburys derives a great deal of benefit [profit] from their customers and the continued provision of toilets is a community 'obligation' [obviously not legally]that Sainsburys should take to heart. Communities Count'

We implore Sainsbury's to consider the welfare of their customers and act accordingly

A review now is timely - in line with Sainsbury's ethos of inclusivity with flexibility and foresight, fostering good will between customer and staff
