18 Jun 2016
Dear friends,
Magsaysay Awardee and national Vice President of Socialist Party (India) Dr Sandeep Pandey began an indefinite fast on 6th June 2016 to demand implementation of Allahabad High Court order of Justice Sudhir Aggarwal dated 18th August 2015 that children of all those drawing salary from the government and elected representatives must compulsorily study in government schools.
Owing to internal consensus of Socialist Party (India) and a large number of noted social activists across the country, Dr Sandeep Pandey ended his fast after a rally to Chief Minister's Office and handing memorandum to the Chief Minister of his demand for common school system. Several social activists such as Medha Patkar, Justice Rajinder Sachar, Kuldip Nayar, Dr Sunilam, Yogendra Yadav, Anand Kumar, Prashant Bhushan, PV Rajagopal, Rajendra Singh, GG Parikh, Aneel Hegde, had appealed to Dr Sandeep Pandey to end his fast.
It was Dr Ram Manohar Lohia who had given the slogan of ‘गरीब की हो या अमीर की हो संतान, सबकी शिक्षा एक समान’ (Be it a child of a poor or rich, education of all should be same). Common school system and same quality of healthcare services for everyone is central to democracy. Socialist Party (India) and several other organizations and networks will scale up the movement to call for establishing a common school system. Socialist Party (India) will keep making efforts to get Allahabad High Court order dated 18th August 2015 implemented at the earliest.
The demands raised by Dr Sandeep Pandey's fast were endorsed by several organisations and social movements in India and other nations in South and South-East Asia.
Prominent among the endorsing organisations in India were: Janta Dal (United), National Alliance of People's Movements (NAPM), Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), RTE Forum, Astha Kiran, Future of India, Regional Resource and Training Centre Pune, Gram Bharati Samiti (GBS) Jaipur and Empower India from Tamil Nadu.

The movement of Socialist Party (India) and partners for common school system will continue. A strategy planning meeting will be held on 25th June 2016 in Gandhi Bhawan, Lucknow.
