Do not dock the porters' wages!

The Issue

The James College Porters of the University of York are the most dedicated team that work purely for the student welfare. They are the best part of living on campus, the most helpful and are highly responsive to students' needs.

The coming year, the porters will face many unfair changes to their working hours, their pay and the entire role in general. Some of the points are as follows:

1. Two-thirds of the porters will have their wages reduced by 20%

2. They want to disband the dedicated college porter teams

3. They want to split them into night and day shifts, leading to bad shifts that make it difficult for them to have a personal life at home and see their families.

4. They want to split the teams, meaning some will work permanent nights.

5. They have reduced weekends

6. The cuts are being made to fund a 225% increase in spending on unnecessary managerial salaries

There are much more points that have not been mentioned, but evidently, all the previous points have made the porters increasingly unhappy. As many of the students know, they are usually the most welcoming and helpful group of individuals. They get to know the students individually and genuinely care for the safety and wellbeing of students. These changes will undoubtedly decrease their morale (as expected).

The least us students can do to pay them back for all their hard work is support them to fight against these unfair changes. Please help by signing and sharing the petition.
