Unlock the Entrances to CNA Prince Philip Parkway Campus During Class Hours
The Issue
My name is Anne Walsh and I am a passionate student at CNA College in St. John's. I am writing to express my deep concern over a new policy recently implemented by our administration that I believe is unnecessary, burdensome, and detrimental to our enriching college experience.
This policy mandates that All Campus Doors, except the main entrance must be locked at 9:30AM Monday - Friday, after being opened from 7:30am-9:30am. While the intention is for security of the Campus, students and staff are penalized by having to walk outside around the large unwieldy Campus building to gain entrance if they have a later class, leave for lunch, break or an appointment after 9:30AM. The rigid implementation fails to consider the diverse needs and schedules of the student body. Many of us rely on attending Campus at various hours of the day to finish assignments, prepare course work, meet with our instructors or classmates, grab food from the café or use the labs or other facilities within the building.
Personally, I am returning to Full Time Studies after retirement from full time work for over 40 years. Being able to enter the building at the entrance closest to my classes and/or close to where I eventually find parking, causes less stress in my day since I and many other students have class supplies, books, backpacks et. which we need for our day. This is not even considering the inclement weather we deal with so often in St.John's and Newfoundland in general.
This policy has limited flexibility, offering little to no leeway for those of us who must park up to a km from the building, have irregular class schedules, let alone staff who might want to or have to leave the building and return after 9:30am.
Moreover, its immediate implementation without a proper consultation phase with the student community disregards our voices and the collaborative spirit our college prides itself on. This new rule increased stress and lack of time management as direct consequences.
Instead, I propose a locking the doors after regular class hours, after 5pm, implementation of a system where Students and Staff can scan their ID cards to enter the building.
The doors to the Campus were NOT locked for the first 3 weeks of classes, what changed on September 24, 2026?
Apparently last year 2025/26, the Campus door where locked daily these same times for 3 WEEKS only? Why did that change? Why start it again? What is the exact reasoning behind this New Policy? When I asked Alaine Sullivan, Senior Manager - Admin Service at CNA PPB, she said the 'Order' came from the Board of the College. She could not explain WHY this Policy is now in place. Though her email Notice did say 'Sorry For The Inconvenience This May Cause'.
Our college has always been a place where student input drives change, and I am confident that reevaluating this policy will lead to a more harmonious and supportive environment for everyone. By confronting these challenges together, we can find a solution that truly benefits our entire student body and upholds the values of our institution.
Please join me in ensuring our voices are heard. Sign this petition today to encourage our college administration to reconsider and revoke this unnecessary policy in favor of more flexible and thoughtful alternatives. Together, we can preserve the vibrant, balanced, and supportive community we all cherish at College of The North Atlantic, prince Phillip Parkway Campus.
