Allow Hammocking and Slacklining on CalPoly's Campus

The Issue

Slacklining and Hammocking have now been outlawed on campus with the addition of sections 334.1.3 (Slackline) and 334.1.4 (Hammocking) to the Campus Administration Policies. By signing this petition you express your disagreement with this change in campus policy.

Slacklining provides students a way to practice their balance and focus as well as being a fun recreational activity. Tim Ross (SLO local) and Jerry Miszewski (former CalPoly student) spent 5 years working with city council in order to make slacklining legal in San Luis Obispo because it is a fun recreational activity that works balance and focus. The city initially raised many concerns such as the potential damage to trees, competition for resources, the liability that would rest on the city in the unlikely case of injury, etc. and determined that slacklining should be allowed.

Slacklining could be allowed in specifically designated areas on specifically built poles, however until such poles are built it would effectively be banned. Additionally, for the reasons mentioned above, there is no reason for the university to go the unnecessary expense of building specific poles.

Hammocking offer students a way to relax and provides relief from the stress of school. There are over 150 active members, CalPoly students, in the CalPoly Hammock Club, and over 1000 who follow the club on instagram, showing their love of hammocking. Similar to slacklining, hammocking causes no adverse effects on the university.
