During COVID-19, it has been a strain on everyone. With the announcement of the third lockdown, life has just become that little bit harder yet again.

In terms of student life, this has had a massive impact on us in many ways. Lack of socialisation, lack of engagement, lack of access to facilities, having to leave our student accommodation due to the initial lockdown, as well as the cancellation of many placements.

Mental health amongst students has deteriorated and not only this, we are expected to still pay the full £9250 tuition fees. This, along with the loss of part-time jobs has caused some students to drop out of university because it is too expensive for them and they cannot cope with the costs, in result impacting their future and leaving them lost, confused, and hopeless.

Third-year students have had to have a virtual graduation. We understand that this is the only way to hold their graduation during the pandemic, however, not only have they missed out, but they have still had to pay the full tuition for something which has been held entirely online. For one of the most special moments of their degree, they should not be made to pay this much money.

There have been countless petitions aimed towards the government about reducing this cost, however, they have stated it is down to each individual university. Therefore, we are demanding that the University of the West of England reduces our tuition fees for the academic year of 2020-2021 as we have had nowhere NEAR the university experience we should have had.

We completely understand that this pandemic has been difficult for everyone and we are not solely placing all of the blame on UWE, however, we feel as though our experience is identical to that of an open university. The open university courses are valued at approximately £2,064/annum (this being for a BSc open university Psychology course, but most courses reach anywhere up to £5000/annum) whereas we are still paying the full value of £9,250/annum for a similar level of education. This is not fair to us students. We understand that face-to-face teaching is not possible during these times, however, we should not be made to pay the same amount of money for an education that is nowhere near as fulfilling.
