SAVE CSM DEGREE SHOW 2022
The Issue
We are a group of final-year fine artists at Central Saint Martins who on our first day of Stage 3 were told we will not have our final degree show on campus in 2022. As a year group, we are heartbroken by the decision and reject the weak compromise of an online showcase, and the suggestion of hosting our own miniature scale group shows across London. Graduates from the previous year were given no choice due to government guidelines around COVID-19 and were not happy with the result of an online degree show. This year, with guidelines meaning we can safely host an onsite physical exhibition, we are being told the lie that an online exhibition is a better option. This is false, unfair and unjustified, and a sad display of UAL underfunding the Fine Art programme. The degree show is a huge selling point of Fine Art at Central Saint Martins with strong public prominence and an incredible networking opportunity for students with the attendees. For the university to take this from us is a truly sad ending to our time as UAL undergraduates, who've already compromised so much throughout the pandemic. We urge the university to reconsider the decision and allow us to host the renowned degree showcase onsite at Central Saint Martins.
