Compensate University of Sussex Students for the Industrial Action
The Issue
University education this year has been tarnished by industrial action and Covid-19. Given the unprecedented nature of a global pandemic, we can forgive the University of Sussex for the impact of the virus on our education.
However, what is unforgiveable, is the proposed lack of financial reimbursement from the University of Sussex for the 4 weeks of strike action in February of this year. Many students had no university at all for this month, and numerous modules were affected and completely unexaminable. This was hugely detrimental on our education, no matter which year of university you were in.
Given the extortionate fees that are paid annually per student to attend university, it seems incredibly unfair to not be compensated when the obligation that university has to provide education is not fulfilled. In any other service or contract, if it is not completed compensation would be given: so why is it any different for our education?
The government has failed to comment on the matter and assist students, and so we have been ignored completely. Therefore, we are taking matters into our own hands.
Consequently, the students of Sussex University would like the University of Sussex to rethink its reimbursement policy and to give us students what we deserve.
