Started by Katie Pearce

Like many others, students have had their world's turned upside down by the global pandemic, but modern languages students at Southampton were exceedingly disappointed to find out that this year's work will be completely disregarded and ignored, in spite of the financial and mental sacrifices.

Other students at the university will receive grades based on all their semester 1 modules (September to mid-January), and after backlash from all departments, the initial policy was changed and semester 2 will be taken into account in regards to final degree classifications.

However, languages students take modules which last a whole year. This means that neither semester one or two will be counted towards our degree. Although we haven't done our final exams, we have all submitted all of the coursework which we believe should be taken into account, especially as in some cases it amounts to 50% of the whole module. Additionally, exams were replaced with an assessment which could also be considered. Despite this, we have still been told that our second year has been discounted and will only be considered at the end of our degree if we are on the cusp of a different classification.

Not only have we paid £9250 for this year, but we have also spent days writing essays and learning vocab. We understand that current circumstances are completely unexpected, but we think that our hard work deserves to be credited.
