Save Read Hall and declare it a state historic site.

The Issue

Read Hall, named after University President Daniel Read, was the first dormitory open to white women on Mizzou’s campus and accepted its first residents in 1903. Black women were excluded from the university until the 1950s, by which time Read was no longer a dormitory. Read Hall has also served the Mizzou community as a hospital during the influenza outbreak of 1918, headquarters to student government, and home to the Maneater student news. This building is a testament to the University’s move towards a more inclusive institution of higher education and must not be demolished. Preserving Read Hall is integral to Mizzou’s institutional history, its women’s history, and to celebrating thousands of women graduates and their accomplishments. We understand that preserving Read Hall comes with a price, but we believe that this deeply important piece of Mizzou’s history is worth investing in. We, as students of the University of Missouri, want to see Read Hall remain on our campus.
