No Detriment Policy for the University of Huddersfield

The Issue

The Coronavirus is taking a massive toll on the lives of students at the University of Huddersfield. Before the campus closed students were having to make the choice between their education or their health, and now many students are left without books, appropriate study spaces, and computer facilities.

Speaking not just from my own experience, but what I've been told by others too, a lot of students are finding it difficult to concentrate on their studies whilst working from home. Due to the impact of COVID-19 on the physical lives and mental health of students, it is unfair to expect students to be able to effectively prepare for exams and assignments, or complete these to the best of their abilities.

For this reason, we suggest that the University of Huddersfield follows suit with what other universities (including Russell groups) have put in place by implementing a 'no detriment' policy. This means that for assessments going forward students can not score below their current average mark for the year, but can still score higher. This gives students peace of mind in these uncertain times.

It is particularly important for the university to consider the mental health and well being of their students during these stressful times, and provide them with a safety net to feel secure about their education.
