Re-Name Calhoun Road (Houston, TX)

Re-Name Calhoun Road (Houston, TX)

The Issue

We (Bring The Pain Sports) are proposing the re-naming of current street known as Calhoun Rd, which stretches from the main entrance to University of Houston to South Park. The current namesake of the street, John C. Calhoun, embraced and flaunted his approval of slavery. He owned dozens of black slaves in Fort Hill, South Carolina. Calhoun stated that slavery was a "positive good," which was beneficial to both slaves and slave owners. The man was a vile, hate-filled human being and this is not the type of individual that is reflective of the beliefs and values of the great, diverse city of Houston. Thus he should not be given the honor of having a public road named after him. I propose instead that we rename the portion from I-45 to the intersection of Old Spanish Trail as "Phi Slamma Jamma" Blvd, in honor of the great University of Houston team that represents a positive reflection of success as a part of the legendary members of the program from the 1980s. The remaining stretch can be re-named as "George Floyd Avenue" in honor of the recently deceased and latest victim of police brutality. The current street runs approximately 2 miles from Mr. Floyd's alma mater, Yates High School. His public assassination has created the rebirth of the push for equality and justice, which are core values that the great city of Houston will embrace an embody as a beacon of hope for others across the globe.
