Save the University of Hawaii Journalism Program

The issue

The Board of Regents at The University of Hawai'i recently announced plans to potentially merge the Journalism program with the communications program, as a bid to conserve finances in the wake of COVID-19.

The Journalism program has fostered success in many students due to their personal connections throughout Hawai'i, their detailed attention to ethical practices, and connectivity with the students.

The Board of Regents are looking at completely eliminating the Bachelor of Journalism, leaving prospective journalists with no specific channel of study at the University of Hawai'i.

As dedicated aspiring Journalists, we understand the importance Journalists play on holding powerful figures accountable and delivering factual news to the public so they are able to form their own opinion about global matters.

Understanding this it's easy to comprehend the detrimental effects that merging a highly specific program such as Journalism with a broad program like Communications would have. The public value of a Journalism degree is very high as it's such a career-focused field, unlike Communications which can lead to many different career choices.

Programs like Ethnic Studies have had success being removed from the stop out list! Please sign and let the Board of Regents know you support the Journalism program at the University of Hawai'i.

Mahalo Nui Loa for your support; it means the world.
