Lower Tuition for the Fall 2020 Semester at University of Calgary

Recently, University of Calgary students (as well as students province-wide) have been subjected to tuition increases beginning in the upcoming Fall 2020 semester. Whether justified at the time of the decision or not, circumstances have abruptly changed in recent months.

We all know that individuals and communities across the province and worldwide have been severely impacted by the nature of the global pandemic. Students and their families have lost income and are overcoming hardship to a greater extent. International students who already face higher tuition rates will be forced to pay more, while many of them will not even be able to return to Calgary for the fall semester.

Since many (or potentially all) of U of C's courses will remain online for the fall semester, these tuition increases are beyond unjust. I am calling for Dr. Edward McCauley and the University of Calgary, or further, the Government of Alberta to protect our student community.

Please sign this petition if you believe our institution should NOT be increasing our tuition rates. Better yet, if they should be decreased to reflect the lower quality of education we will be receiving. The decision to move to remote delivery is ultimately in the best interest of the health and safety of the student population at this time. Unfortunately, this does not account for the mental health, potential for decreased GPAs, and poor quality of home lives of many of these students. Your support is greatly appreciated during these unprecedented times.
