The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the lives of every student at the University of Bradford. Students of the University of Bradford have received extended assessment deadlines and online resources however due to the uncertainty, confusion and panic surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic further steps need to be taken.
Classes moving online means that students simply can't be taught to the same standards and serves to disadvantage those who do not have easy access to the internet/a computer. The closing of university buildings, although unavoidable, also limits access to vital resources such as library books, design software, workshops and guidance. We should not be penalised for these extraordinary circumstances, particularly since many have family members relying on them that must take priority over studying or suffer with mental health issues made worse by lockdown conditions which are inevitably going to affect the quality of work produced. The actions of the university so far are of course appreciated however they are not enough.
Following the lead of other universities such as the University of Manchester and the University of Exeter, a 'no-disadvantage' policy whereby grades following Friday 20th March (when our face-to-face teaching was 'officially' suspended) will only affect our overall grade for the year if they will help rather than hinder it should be introduced.
Considering the unexpected, unparalleled circumstances we now find ourselves in, this mitigating system will help to create more equal results for students being assessed at the University. It allows students to achieve a grade which reflects their work under ordinary circumstances, whilst providing an incentive to do well as there is still a chance to improve grades. Students deserve a chance to focus on both their education and wellbeing without having to sacrifice one or the other!
Please sign and hopefully we might be able to make a difference!
