I've had a successful meeting with the university today and wanted to feedback some of what I learned.

In order for the university to track the people who want to keep these accounts please email alumni@abdn.ac.uk and servicedesk@abdn.ac.uk. In that email state clearly why or if you want to keep the account.

There appears to have been some people who never received the original email regarding the account closures. If you are one of these make sure to make that clear in the email.

The university are not just going to close accounts from underneath people but they do need to know who are still using the accounts and who would require the accounts are kept open.

If I hear any more I'll update via here again.
