Universal Public Health Education and Policies on Stress, Trauma and Resilience in Vermont

Universal Public Health Education and Policies on Stress, Trauma and Resilience in Vermont
The Issue
As a seasoned medical provider in primary care, I witnessed the prevalence of trauma and stress in my patients. Did you know that more than 50% of the population will experience a traumatic event at some point in their lives? And yet, many are unfamiliar with the basic concepts of stress, trauma, resilience, and post-traumatic growth.
We can change this - through universal public education. Ensuring that every Vermonter has access to information about stress, trauma, and resilience can empower individuals to understand, manage, and overcome their own traumatic experiences.
In communities in which trauma-informed care was instituted, studies have shown reductions in crime rates, substance abuse, and suicidal attempts, alongside improvements in mental health, economic status, educational accomplishment, and even longevity. (Sources: Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, American Journal of Community Psychology).
Please sign this petition to demand such education for the general public and all Vermont systems (including Medicine, Education, mental health, law enforcement, corrections, and more). Let's empower ourselves and our communities with the knowledge to transform trauma and create more compassion for ourselves and each other.
