I see some people seem to be unclear on what's the big deal about this petition and push for 70mm IMAX prints of First Man, besides from the celluloid vs digital difference/preference. It's about how the film is presented in its intended venues - the 'traditional'/'real' IMAX screens. So, with the studio releasing a full-frame still from the IMAX-filmed moonwalk sequence, I put together this visual comparison. Hopefully this should clear stuff up...
The point is that on a ‘real IMAX’ screen like the BFI’s, having the sequence actually *full screen* makes a difference because that’s the whole point. Chazelle mentioned this in multiple interviews - it’s that Wizard of Oz effect where you get the biggest and clearest image once on the moon.
