Worldwide, women and their families are impacted by oppressive violence, such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, and stalking. The World Health Organization estimates that 1 in 3 women 15 years and older globally, have experienced physical and/or sexual abuse in a current or past relationship, or sexual violence from a  non-partner relationships, or both.

Nationally, the Violence Against Women Act, VAWA, was enacted in 1994 through grants and federal funding to provide resources to survivors of domestic violence. VAWA is reauthorized every five years and has expanded. However, the reauthorization process is through bipartisan negotiations. If both parties do not come to an agreement, the act and the additions are at a standstill. Funding and adaptation of the act should evolve with the survivor's needs, not negotiated between two political parties. Oppressive violence is a serious crime and needs to be treated as such.
