I am writing this letter on behalf of the group We Need Justice Too, as concerned citizens of the city of Pittsburgh, PA and surrounding areas. Our objective is to make you aware of the unsolved murders and violent crimes that plague our communities, specifically the increase in violence between Police officers and residents. This is indeed an epidemic in which our local government is doing little or nothing to resolve.

From 2004 to 2013 there have been 553 murders throughout Pittsburgh. Of those murders, 214 remain unsolved and 85% of the unsolved are African Americans. These numbers reflect the amount of loss that this region has seen, and the statistics are increasing at an alarming rate. Among some of the lives affected is Jordan Miles, a high school student brutally attacked by Pittsburgh Police. Also, Leon Ford a man left paralyzed by city officers after mistaking his identity following a routine traffic stop. Most recently there was Adrian Williams, a father viciously murdered, again during a routine traffic stop. The officer that killed him was an officer that Mr. Williams had previous encounters with during his life. The aggression, harassment and unjust treatment of Black men in this city on a daily basis must stop. We are tired of burying our children.

With all of the violence in our neighborhoods it seems those in authority pose the biggest threat. Any crimes committed by Pittsburgh Police officers are supervised by internal investigations while the same people who took an oath to protect and uphold the laws are the same ones killing our youth.

The people of Pittsburgh are in search of assistance from a federal level due to lack of solutions from our city officials. It is time for an investigation from outside the confines of our local government. A thorough examination of how the Pittsburgh Police department operates is necessary.

Thank you for your time and consideration of this pressing matter. We hope that you respond with supreme urgency.
