Protect life on Earth! Say no to geoengineering!

Have you heard about geoengineering (GE) before? Do you know what it actually is? If you answered "no" to one or both of these questions, you are normal. Most people don't really know what GE is, and that is a big problem since it will affect everyone on this planet - and lobbyists are working hard to make GE a climate solution (might even be included in the new Climate agreement at COP21, december 2015). It's a human right to be allowed involvement in matters regarding their life and wellbeing (it's common sense, but to make sure, it's also stated in UN documents)

What is geoengineering?
GE has a variation of definitions but they all say roughly this:
"It's the deliberate manipulation of planet Earth and its systems."
There are different types of GE, but in this context they will be used to try slowing down climate change. Below we give a short introduction to the two main types that are suggested as solutions: CDR & SRM.

CDR (Carbon Dioxide Removal) technologies use biological, chemical, or physical processes to cause the ocean or terrestrial biosphere to absorb atmospheric CO2 or directly store it geologically.

SRM (Solar Radiation Management) technologies aims to “dim” or reflect the sun. One concept is to mimic the dimming & cooling effects of a volcanic eruption (and existing pollution made by human activity). Another concept is 'whitening' clouds to reflect the sun’s rays. Both concepts means spraying aerosols into the sky.

Why is it bad?
Climate engineering/geoengineering can radically disrupt weather patterns and the hydrological cycle (causing drought in some areas, flooding others), depleting the ozone layer, and contaminating the entire planet with the toxic fallout from the atmospheric spraying. As if this was not enough, the dimming of the sun also results in degradation of many biological processes (including in humans).

The goal is to remove GE as a solution to existing problems.
Yes, we want strong global agreements attacking challenges regarding environment & climate, but current discussions include GE as a solution. We need to have documents that instead state that “geoengineering is not a solution”.
In the same way that food regulations have paragraphs about GMO restrictions (genetic engineering) we must include GE restrictions in  operational/executional documents.

In addition to the people who signed this petition, there are many groups / organisations who say no to GE. And last but not least, we have legal documents (treaties, conventions) and the Precautionary principle.
Politicians everywhere have a duty to make sustainable decisions!
