This petition is to call for the United Nations to do whatever is necessary to put an halt on the prolonged support that Khalifa Haftar has been receiving from Abu Dhabi. Countries, including the UAE, Egypt, Russia and France, must end their support for Haftar, who has been severely violating the human rights in Libya. The recent discovery of mass graves by the LNA forces have been the most dreadful episode in past more than 6 years of war.

For years, civilians in Libya have suffered due to the greed for power and economic benefits of Khalifa Haftar and the international parties that have intervened in the war. Since 2014, Haftar and his forces have been advancing, while gaining foreign military and monetary support, to overthrow Fayez al-Sarraj, head of the UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA).

In April 2019, the Libyan National Army (LNA), under Haftar, launched the Western Libya campaign to capture the western region and capital of the African country, Tripoli. As per the data, more than 2,356 people died in the offensives. In months after, the Haftar forces resorted to arms and weapons in one year of war in Libya.

Airstrikes launched by the LNA have targeted residential areas, schools, airports and other regions in the west, killing of men, women and children. While the number of casualties remain uncertain, it is known to be high and rising continuously. The war has also left nearly 900,000 people in need of assistance, while hundreds of thousands were forced to leave their homes.

International parties like Russia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt and France have been backing Khalifa Haftar in gaining control over the country, by providing arms, mercenaries and other military support. The Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Force and Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Mohammed bin Zayed has been one of the most crucial supporters of Haftar’s objectives.

A number of airstrikes in Tripoli have been conducted using Emirati drones and the Chinese drone, Wing Long-II, which was also purchased by Abu Dhabi. Several companies of the UAE have facilitated Haftar and his forces with arms, helicopters and cyber capabilities. The Gulf nation has also violated the UN arms embargo on several occasions.

In June 2020, the GNA recaptured the regions of Tripoli, which were under the control of the Haftar forces. The 14-month long war crimes in Tripoli ended, but the Libyan army made some horrific discoveries of mass graves, where hundreds of bodies have been discovered. In 40 days till July 15, a total of 225 bodies were unearthed from mass graves in south Tripoli, the city of Tarhuna and neighboring areas.

The discovery of these mass graves has been terrifying, and is one of the greatest human rights abuse by Haftar and his forces. The militia leader has only inflicted deaths and misery upon Libya, which makes the abundant support he is receiving from Abu Dhabi questionable.

People in Libya are facing grave consequences of the war for power, where foreign nations are only giving rise to war crimes and human rights abuses. Please sign and share my petition, so that it reaches the concerned authorities, who must act to put an end to the war and all the outside intervention. Take a minute to stand with Libya and its people.
Thank you.
