We are a group of Arctic experts and scientists with decades of experience in Arctic research. The science shows that the Arctic is experiencing dramatic changes, and that this is likely to lead to profound global consequences and risks.
Climate change is real, it is happening now, and humans are largely causing it. What happens in the Arctic does not stay there, it affects us all; rising sea levels, temperature changes, extreme weather - these risks fundamentally affect our health and safety at a global level.
Arctic change is at a critical juncture, and hard choices need to be made. These choices must be evidence-based, and not ideologically driven.
Working as independent nations, we lack the logistical capacity and budget to tackle the challenges that Arctic change throws up. A truly international and integrated effort is needed, and it is needed now.
We are calling for the creation of a globally funded scientific response and analysis team to meet this challenge.
To make sure that politicians, policy-makers, industry leaders and the public have access to up-to-date and robust science available, in order to make effective global decisions.
The science community understands the gravity of the risk that Arctic change presents. But we need the message to travel further and wider.
So we decided to bring the Arctic to Davos, setting up an Arctic base-camp and holding a Science Meeting to bring this message to world leaders at the World Economic Forum. The meeting will be held on Jan 18th, 2017.
