Strict action againt Female Genital Mutilation
The Issue
FGM is a big social problem. It is a practice that takes place worldwide in at least 28 African countries and in parts of the Middle and Far East. It also takes place within parts of Western Europe and other developed countries also in USA , among immigrant and refugee communities. Communities that are at risk of FGM include Somali, Kenyan, Ethiopian, Sierra Leonean, Sudanese, Egyptian, Nigerian, Eritrean, Yemeni, Kurdish and Indonesian Dawoodi muslim women and girls.
FGM is believed to be a way of ensuring virginity and chastity. It is used to safeguard girls from sex outside marriage and from having sexual feelings. Although FGM is cultural issue , it is most often claimed to be carried out in accordance with religious beliefs. FGM is not supported by any religious doctrine.
Though FGM is illegal in western countries , it is still rampant in western countries because prosecution is very difficult , In UK alone 500,000 women and girls had gone FGM , and yet not only single person is prosecution, same is the case in USA , where though equal numbers of women and girls had undergone FGM yet there is only one case of prosecution.
It is clear that child welfare organisations in western countries are not taking this issue seriously, and are hesitant to prosecute the people behind it , because in majority of the cases the people behind it are parents and usually for FGM , parents take their child to their native countries where the laws are not strict.
FGM has no health benefits, in fact it harms girls and women in many ways. It involves removing and damaging healthy and normal female genital tissue, and interferes with the natural functions of girls' and women's bodies. FGM is often done without anaesthesia, without medical supervision and sometimes the procedure goes horribly wrong.
It often leads to pain, shock, tetanus, genital sores, excessive bleeding, etc. In some cases death as well due to infection, also has long-lasting psychological impact on the victims, ranging from sexual disorders, fear of sexual intimacy, nightmares and post traumatic stress disorder.
Though , the UN General Assembly adopted a unanimous resolution on the elimination of FGM , in 2012 , and is ban in 20 African countries , but the UN resolution has no effect on FGM . Unless the UN deals strictly with the countries where FGM is taking place rampantly , resolution does hold any meaning. As FGM is one of the potent form of child abuse done by their parents.
Its my humble request to all organisation that work for female child welfare that please put some pressure on UN and WHO , so that it take this issue seriously and plays it part in eradication of this social evil.
