Save Bluefin tuna fish!!!!!
The Issue
ICCAT (International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas) is an association of United Nations focusing on conservation of Bluefin tuna population. In efforts to conserve tuna population, ICCAT has enforced few laws in international fishing. 2 key laws enforced are as below:
Reduced total allowable catch from 27,500 in 2007 to 13,400 in 2014. This is a good move so far because and has been effective
Fish less than 30 kg should be caught. This law is enforced more through audits, however during purse seine fishing, tunas of all sizes above ~10 kgs are caught.
We think we have a solution to solve this. We are proposing ICCAT to enhance the enforcement to increase the opening size of nets used in purse seine fishing which will help small fish to escape and reproduce more in their lifetime. This helps the population of the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna to increase. We need the smaller fish to escape the net to allow them more time to reproduce. The more they reproduce, the better for the total population
We are proposing ICCAT to enhance the enforcement to increase the opening size of nets used in purse seine fishing to Help save the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna by signing this petition. Every single signature counts!
Requesting to add a regulation to increase the net hole size to double than current size
