REQUEST OF UN INTERVENTION IN ORDER TO REVERSE THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT DECISION ON IMPOSING A HEALTH PASS TO BE ALLOWED TO WORK
On 18th October 2021 hundreds of workers of the International Free Port of Trieste started a strike against the decision of the Italian Government to introduce a Health Pass in order to be able to work. The Pass is given only to workers that are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. The non-vaccinated and the ones that have only one dose are asked to have an expensive covid-test every 48 hours at their own expenses, and if they do not comply, they lose the right to work and to have their salary. Even if this is an attempt of the Italian Government to increase the number of vaccinated people, the vaccination is not compulsory, and there are examples in the world that can be used without violating people’s rights. In fact, this measure violates the EU rules and the rights of the citizens, leaving those that have worked during the lockdown without the possibility to afford the basic needs for their families, despite they have worked without stopping during the pandemic to ensure that all the citizens have the basic supplies during the emergency. The workers have asked the Italian Government to reverse the decision, however the government replied with extreme violence using police forces against peaceful people, whilst banning the protest leader for a year from entering the city of Rome because he has put a table and some chairs in a public square asking world leaders the possibility to talk, in order to achieve a solution that is not discriminatory. Currently, the people in Trieste are also limited in their movement in the Territory (especially in Trieste city centre) with restrictions in public areas controlled with hostility by the Italian Police and the Italian Armed Forces that are using war equipment to keep the people out of the public areas.
Because the International Free Port of Trieste is under the responsibility of the UN Security Council, this petition is meant to ask the UN Security Council to intervene by sending the UN Peacekeeping personnel (Blue Helmets) to Trieste in order to:
1 - Re-establish peace in the area that is seeing an escalation of the violence;
2 - Start the negotiations in order to reverse the decision of the Italian Government against the workers
3 - Eliminate the discrimination that it has created and to re-establish the rights of the people of Trieste;
4 – Protect the Civilians that have now restrictions in their freedom of movement in the Territory
