On 8th Shawwal-al-Mukarram, Wednesday, in the year 1345 AH (April 21, 1925), mausoleums in Jannat-ul-Baqi (Medina) and Jannat-ul-Mualla (Mecca) were demolished by Ibn Saud. These cemeteries originated from the time of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and he himself buried his relatives and companions there. The graveyard, in particular, is important to Shi’ite and Sunni Muslims throughout the world, as four of the twelve Imams (grandsons of the Prophet) and the daughter of the Prophet, Syeda Fatima Zahra (S.A) are buried there.

The graveyard over the past decades has also been a symbol of great injustice due to the destruction of the tombs on these cemeteries by the Wahhabi Saudi Government. There is also a strict restriction on visitors, from going anywhere close to the graves where the four Imams and companions are buried. Women are also strictly forbidden from entering the cemetery to pay their respect.

The extensive nature of the destruction caused by the Wahhabis to the holy shrines of the Aulia Allah (saints) in different parts of the world, such as in Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and more recently Tunis, Libya and Mali (Timbuktu) has brought grave emotional distress and sorrow to Muslims around the world.

Muslims all over the world are extremely concerned and fearful that the Terrorist Wahhabi al-Nusrah Front in Syria, which has already been declared a terrorist organization by the government of the United States of America, will try to bring harm to the sacred shrines of Syeda Zainab (S.A) and Syeda Sakina Bint-ul-Hussain (S.A), the granddaughters of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) located in Damascus, Syria.

It is a universal fact that places like cemeteries, religious shrines and mausoleums are of great calibre in every religion. We strongly urge the United Nations Secretary-General Ban António Guterres, the Presidents and the Prime Ministers of the member states of the United Nations to realize the religious significance of the reconstruction of Jannat-ul-Baqi, Jannat-ul-Mualla and the protection of the sacred mausoleums including other religious sites all over the world.

We request the above authorities to exercise all their available resources to help protect the holy shrines in Syria and with the reconstruction of the cemeteries located in Mecca and Medina.
