NON-RESIDENT INDIANS OPPOSE CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT BILL

NON-RESIDENT INDIANS OPPOSE CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT BILL
The Issue
We, non-resident Indian nationals belongs to many faith and religions are concerned about the divisive and unconstitutional Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) brought in by the BJP Government of India.
The changes introduced by the Citizenship Amendment Bill are in violation of both the secular framework of India’s Constitution, as well as human rights law.
- The use of religion as a criterion for citizenship in the subject amendment of the bill would mark a radical break with this history and would be inconsistent with the basic structure of the Constitution. We fear that the intentional exclusion of Muslims from the ambit of the bill will greatly strain the pluralistic fabric of the
country. - The amendments introduced is unconstitutional and violates the Article 14 of the Constitution that guarantee equality before the law & protection from discrimination on religious grounds to all people in the Indian territory.
- In addition, this bill will severely damage India’s reputation on the global stage. India has always been known and respected as a secular, diverse and unified democracy, today because of the blatant discrimination and bigotry in the CAB, India will lose that prestigious title.
We request all to support this petition and urge Honorable President of India, Chief Justice of Supreme Court and the concerned bodies of human rights to do all possible interventions to stop this bill from being execution.
