For those fearful of depopulation conspiracies: if you believe The Elites are trying to depopulate us, why isn't abortion fully legal globally? Why is it so difficult, in many cases, for younger women without kids in their 20s and 30s to get voluntarily sterilized? Why aren't abortion and sterilization services "free" or fully publicly covered in every country's healthcare system? Why aren't condoms always free or publicly covered? Why do some women still struggle trying to get birth control prescriptions/treatments?
If a secret cabal of elites are trying to globally depopulate us, you'd think there'd be a walk-in abortion and sterilization clinic offering over-the-counter "free" condoms and birth control pills at every corner in every neighborhood.
Instead, many politicians around the world are still fighting to criminalize abortion, make it more difficult to get contraception, ban comprehensive sexual and reproductive education in schools, while many cultures still encourage large families as a status symbol or as a "blessing", there's plenty of pronatalist/pro-birth cultural messaging, there are child benefit and credit incentives to have more children since governments encourage population growth for their economic growth models (they need an ongoing supply of soldiers, workers, consumers, voters, tax-payers, etc), and openly childfree by choice people are mocked, shamed, stigmatized, and ridiculed despite it being less rare than it was 50 years ago.
People still try to convince childfree by choice people to have children to add to population growth. Many of us have heard "you'll change your mind, it's different when it's yours, you're so young-don't say that, who'll take care of you when you're old, don't you want to leave a legacy?!?". I actually had an older female relative try to convince me to have children by saying I would get a lot of money from child benefits and credits (I am very aware it is politically controversial to even admit that people intentionally have children primarily or purely for the government assistance, but this happens).
How do the "elites" practically benefit from lowering the numbers of the subjects they rule over? The elites need wage-laborers or "wage-slaves" and consumers, banks need people indebted to them and using their services, militaries need soldiers, and so on. The fact there are sustainable population activists focused on degrowth is disconnected from socioeconomic elites. We are doing this for a better standard and quality of life for humanity, wildlife, and the environment, for our collective survival and well-being.
The futurist fantasy of escaping to Mars and colonizing other planets after humanity has finally used up all of Earth's resources and our Earthly home-planet becomes uninhabitable does not fit within a realistic timelime based on theoretical trajectories and model predictions of Earth's ecological collapse along with human civilizational collapse, and how technologically far behind we are when it comes to achieving successful terraformation of other planets.
We need to preserve this one and that becomes nearly impossible to do with more and more people. We can voluntarily and consensually reduce human population, but we need changes to happen on the level of convincing a critical mass of people to not have children. Education, accessible contraception, more birth control methods including for men, and yes, legal abortion, as well as normalized accessible sterilization services, is a part of that.
Don't be scared of "depopulation". We need to destigmatize it. We need it for future generations that will STILL EXIST, just in smaller numbers.
