Don't you think 7.8 billion human population is not a large number? Do you think planet can keep producing natural resources finitely? What do you think caused the climate catastrophy? What do you think caused poverty? What do you think bring capitalism? Who consumes? Do you know there are other species on the planet that are essential for the planet and a part of ecosystem (unlike us that offer nothing back to nature), they have a right to live? Do you know we we have lost 68% of all vertebrate wildlife populations since 1970, because our population doubled during that period and activity increased?
There is scientific evidence that human overpopulation is the root of every environmental problem, and reducing the birth rate is the number one solution beside our activity.
Knowing generally how deniers respond to overpopulation issue, I can see a lot of people think population should be controlled in developing countries such as Africa and Asia. That's true, but the per head consumption in developed countries is much higher and approximately one child born in Europe or U.S equivalent to 6 in developing countries in terms of CO2 and consumption. Developing countries on the other hand, don’t have access to contraception and adequate education to achieve that. We in West also with our high demands on foods and goods because we are also populated putting pressure on foreing soils and we are all in ecological overshoot. Population is every individual responsibility in every country. The birth rate may decline in West but it is still growing because of its momentum.
It is not offensive to ask people to respect the planet and stop or reduce birthrate, it is the most sensible action to take. In countries like China and India consumption per head also increasing, and the birthrate is very high in those countries, but even if they want they cannot live with the same level of consumption here we have in West but everyone trying to catch up to consume more. We are the big part of problem and every single of us count. Moreover, we may have set up our territory and borders (we say our country) but there's only one planet with finite resources (water, habitable space, oxygen, minerals, etc) and it is in ecological overshoot regardless of your geographical location. Human population should reduce urgently and allow others creatures to survive.
I believe population reduction is every individual responsibility. I am childfree by choice, I started from myself to allow habitat for others and better quality of life for everyone including other species and myself.
