"We, the undersigned individuals and organisations, petition the United Nations to highlight the need for gender equality and women’s empowerment in and through the media – on and offline - in the post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals. We cannot talk about equality, good governance, freedom of expression and sustainability when women are under-represented behind editors desks and in media company boardrooms, and absent or misrepresented in our media as sources and subjects. We note that the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity acknowledges that women journalists are increasingly becoming victims of sexual harassment and rape. We also draw attention to the need for action regarding new media technologies which are not being maximised to elevate the human rights of women, and in some cases are being used to abuse and threaten women journalists and media participants."
