Call an International Conference on the Greek Debt, as a matter of urgency
The Issue
The situation with Greece is now turning into a catastrophe and this cannot carry on any longer. If it was any other country the UN would have already intervened but, because it’s Europe, it seems to be outside the UN’s “jurisdiction”. An International Conference needs to be organised now, presided by the UN, the USA, Russia, Brazil, India and China among other countries; a conference with the sole aim of finding a solution to the Greek debt problem, a solution good for the country and for its creditors. We have done so before in 1953 with the London Agreement on German External Debts.
Europe has failed. A banking crisis has turned into a tale of morality, a lie about the prudent taxpayer of the North and the unruly southerners. The ECB, the European Commissioner, some finance ministers of the Eurozone and leaders of political factions in the European Parliament all have attempted to intervene in the political process in Greece, in order to blackmail the Greeks to vote ‘yes’ to another round of austerity. It is not just a tale of morality, it is also a story of empty cashpoints, desperate pensioners, and of an emerging humanitarian catastrophe. All indications suggest that Europe will carry on playing the same punitive role of the indignant parent. Meanwhile, Greece is running out of medicine. We cannot let Europe destroy itself; please add your vote to this call for an International Conference on the Greek Debt.
