Change Colonel Santos Benavides Elementary School to Harriet Tubman Elementary School

The Issue

Santos Benavides was the highest ranking Tejano officer in the Confederate Army. He helped the Confederate states export their produced cotton to Mexico for sale. He was a "slave catcher" (i.e. he retrieved runaway slaves from Mexico and returned them back to their owners).

Santos Benavides' history should be remembered, but it should not be glorified. He most certainly does not deserve to have anything named after him. Colonel Santos Benavides Elementary School should be named "Harriet Tubman Elementary School." Instead of being named after a slave catcher, this school should be named after someone who freed slaves. United Independent School District needs to set a better example for its young students by honoring a hero instead of glorifying a slavery enabler.
