Sanctuary Mahi Whenua Gardens and Food Forest
Feb 10, 2018
Unitec’s land company (WLC) has advised that the Sanctuary must be vacated by 1 May 2018 in preparation for the land being sold for development by the end of 2018. We (the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua Society) seek to retain this green space as it embodies the values of community and environmental sustainability that both Auckland Council and Unitec have at the core of their future planning. Unitec’s land company only addresses the monetary value of the site, with little or no consideration given to the wider cultural, community, Iwi, heritage, environmental and urban conservation values. This is a significant missed-opportunity, so we have generated our own development plan, accommodating both intensified housing and the retention of the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua as a community resource, to illustrate a more inclusive development strategy. We hope to work with Unitec to secure a more exemplary solution for this precious site as the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua green space is a valuable asset for any housing development and warrants being retained. Intensification and sustainable permaculture are not mutually exclusive. With vision and foresight, they can enhance each other and be the actualisation of ecological development and best practice intensification. We are now beginning the process of contacting Ministers, local politicians and other interested people, in an effort to retain the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua green space.
