Sanctuary Mahi Whenua Gardens and Food Forest
Feb 22, 2018
The Sanctuary Mahi Whenua society has been advised by Unitec’s land company (WLC) that they, 'expect to have vacant possession from May 1, 2018' of the land on which the food forest and gardens are located. This is in preparation for the land being sold for development at the end of 2018. Please share our messages far and wide so we can retain this valuable asset. Here are some key points to share with your friends and your community: We support the need for new, quality housing development in Auckland. The Sanctuary represents a tangible opportunity to develop a ‘best practice’ exemplar around this existing community and biodiversity asset. Intensification and biodiverse sustainable open spaces are not mutually exclusive. The Sanctuary is a site with an important history. Māori gardening tools have been found on the site, and it has been a place of cultivation for all of its known history. The Sanctuary is home to a unique and mature food forest, with many unusual and rare plant species. The Sanctuary is a place that is a strong anchor for the community that stretches far beyond our Society's members. As Auckland grows, we need to recognise, protect, and celebrate precious sites like the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua that will be needed by future generations. With your support our action group believes the Sanctuary Mahi Whenua can be retained as an entity. Thank you
