Unite for Equality: Support the SOGIE Bill To Uphold the Rights of All Individuals

The Issue

The several expenses of inequity stemming from prejudice against the LGBT community has garnered extensive research both domestically and globally. According to Enriquez (2017) Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) people still face discrimination and abuses of their fundamental rights in the Philippines. There are still many people who have prejudices and unfavorable opinions toward LGBT persons. This is a result of deeply embedded cultural standards and societal conventions that do not recognize or accept a range of sexual orientations and gender identities. For example, it would be a stereotype if a person believes that a transgender woman is a gay even though it runs to a process or transition on becoming a woman. Another one, if a person thinks that lesbian shouldn't wear men clothes, and must wear dresses because she's a girl. These generalizations can cause bias and misconceptions because they disregard the distinctive qualities and originality of every person. It is critical to treat everyone with respect and tolerance because LGBT persons are just as diverse as people outside of the group.

That is why we need your support to fully pass the House Bill No. 4982, or the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) bill. The purpose of the proposed law is to stop discrimination against anyone on the basis of their gender identity, sexual orientation, or gender expression. This bill's main goal is to guarantee that everyone's rights and dignity are respected and equally protected, regardless of their SOGIE. It aims to solve the problems that LGBTQ+ people encounter in areas including work, education, public services, and facility access. The SOGIE bill seeks to make society more equitable and encouraging for all by advancing inclusivity and equality.

The passing of the SOGIE Bill is a milestone in the direction of a more progressive and united Philippines as well as a social justice issue. It would strongly convey a message of respect and acceptance for the variety of identities that its people possess. Moreover, it would contribute to lowering the concerning incidence of violence and harassment that the LGBTQ+ community experiences. The Philippines can show that it is committed to protecting the rights and dignity of all of its citizens by making sure the SOGIE Bill passes, which will ultimately lead to a more peaceful and successful country.

We urge you to make your voice be heard by supporting House Bill no. 4982. Every humans deserves kindness and protection under the law. Please sign this petition today!
