“…there are plenty of encouraging signs in which to ground our hope. Coupled closely with the community self-defense people are enacting to protect their neighbors from ICE kidnappings and fascist incursions. A recent shining example of rescuing each other has been in response to the federal government shut down during which people started stepping up even more to take care of each other. And though the media often doesn’t report on grassroots community care responses, when it came to this there was stronger local coverage. Even more importantly, we all get to witness and participate in these empowering acts of care first-hand. Neighbors are donating in record numbers to food banks, volunteering to deliver groceries, cooking and distributing hot meals to each other, and sharing rides and resources to get folks the help they need. Communities are banding together.
This is our strength. The collective power to unite in defense of one other. The power to act in real life. In our current landscape of algorithmic separation and corporate-agenda driven media, this has been heartening.
We’re joining the chorus of voices advocating for these direct acts of care to continue. Let’s dig in our heels for the approaching winter. Now that the government is re-opening to under-distribute the people’s funds to the things that matter most, the need is still urgent.
Taking care of each other is foundational to taking our power back. The threat of starvation in a landscape of abundance is barbarism. The United States does not lack food, nor does it lack people willing to prioritize each other’s basic needs. We are all seeing that clearly, especially in the past month. People are coming together to provide for one other, and we must continue to do so. This foundation of care will enable the revolutionary changes needed to build a better world. Far too many evils have been perpetuated by systems that shackle our ability to provide for our basic needs to waged labor in service of oligarchs. We must break this yoke.
Our struggles are interconnected, and the people united can overcome them all.
Periodic “black-outs” and intensified periods of targeted pressure will help raise awareness and should be welcomed as an on-ramp to a sustained practice of resistance. The kind of resistance that will not let up until we accomplish tangible goals and substantive change. We’re not settling for peace in name only, nor for counterfeit justice. We demand an end to funding for apartheid, genocide, and endless wars.
Our practice of resistance continues until our demands are met.”
