The Issue
Professor Irma Kroeze, in her capacity as a lecturer for LJU4801, Legal Philosophy, at the University of South Africa is one of the most dedicated, loyal, and passionate lecturers that we have come across during all of our years of study with this institution. She is supportive and avails herself on various platforms daily with the concerns and queries of students relating to the subject matter.
We as the registered students of LJU4801 during the 2021 academic year, and by providing our signatures to this petition, completely understand and do not take offence against the message that Prof Kroeze sent out on Telegram on 08 June 2021, also included in the official circular set out to students. Her message sent on Telegram, although harsh, and not well received by the minority of students, should be seen in the context that it was given, this being frustration and disappointment of yet another inconsistent decision by the university to extend deadlines, once again. The Prof did indicate that her message was sent in haste, and subsequently apologised to students. Therefore;
We as the students of LJU4801 request that the University with immediate effect reinstates Prof Kroeze as the primary lecturer for LJU4801. She has been by our side since the beginning of this already challenging year, and removing her now will prejudice us, as we will not receive the same level of support and guidance from the other lecturers as we have been receiving from her in this challenging module. What has already been a slow, and disastrous start to the 2021 academic year, as a result of factors known to all by now, should not be further complicated, or made difficult for students by removing a competent, and supportive lecturer.
If the University wishes to pursue their own investigation into the matter, they are welcome to do so by following their own internal procedures, but not at the cost of the students, and especially not during this time of the academic year! Signatories hereto, will not accept this type of impromptu decisions and behaviour by university management without considering the wellbeing and wishes of students.
If the university is willing to stand by its decision, that is, removing a lecturer for caring too much about the module she lectures, her students, and the integrity of our degree and the institution she works for, we have little hope left.
