The Issue

As Syria embarks on a pivotal transition following the end of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8, 2024, a new chapter of hope has opened for its people. However, the scars of the past remain, With over 157,634 individuals still forcibly disappeared or detained, according to the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), the magnitude of this crisis is staggering. Among these are 5,274 children and 10,221 women, victims of years of brutality and suppression. Even after the Syrian revolution succeeded in freeing thousands of detainees, over 130,000 people remain unaccounted for, leaving families in anguish and uncertainty.

This is an urgent plea to the international community, NGOs, and humanitarian organizations to act decisively during this historic period.

The Crisis of the Disappeared and Detained

The previous regime left behind a legacy of forced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, and countless mass graves. While efforts by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the United Nations, and other international organizations have been ongoing, the sheer scale of the crisis has overwhelmed these initiatives. Families have the right to know the fate of their loved ones, and survivors deserve justice.

Immediate Actions Needed

1. Comprehensive Investigations: Establish independent and professional teams to investigate mass graves, ensuring adherence to international forensic standards. DNA testing and forensic analysis must be prioritized to identify victims and provide closure to families.

2. Support for Families: Allocate resources to help families locate and retrieve the remains of their loved ones, offering psychological and social support throughout the process.

3. Release of Detainees: Expedite the release of detainees unlawfully held under the previous regime and provide them with medical and psychological care to aid their recovery.

4. Transparency and Accountability: Ensure the transitional government collaborates fully with international organizations to document atrocities and prosecute those responsible for crimes against humanity.

5. International Cooperation: Call upon NGOs, governmental delegates, and international bodies to bolster efforts on the ground. A united global response is essential to address the humanitarian crisis effectively.

A New Dawn for Syria

The transitional government in Syria represents a unique opportunity to rebuild the nation on a foundation of justice and human rights. By addressing the plight of the disappeared and detained, Syria can begin to heal and move toward a future of accountability and reconciliation.

We urge the international community to stand with the Syrian people during this critical time. Let us ensure that the voices of the disappeared are not silenced and that justice prevails for all victims.
