Unblock New York Times on school Chromebooks

The Issue

Growing up, I always found myself drawn to news articles, stories of change, and the opportunity to learn something new about the world every day. One of the most influential sources for me has been The New York Times—a publication renowned for its in-depth coverage and reliable reporting. It has shaped my understanding of the world, encouraged my curiosity, and instilled a sense of morality and critical thinking in me that I believe every student should have access to.

However, I recently discovered that students  across Long Island and throughout New York  are being denied access to The New York Times on their school Chromebooks. Especially during crucial hours, such as 10:42-11:24 AM, when many fresh news updates are available, students are missing out on critical information and learning opportunities. As we navigate an ever-changing global landscape, it is crucial that we allow our youth to engage with a diverse array of news sources to foster informed, civic-minded, and intelligent individuals.

Statistics show that 75% of teachers believe that news plays a vital role in educational settings (Pew Research), and many students agree that engaging with current events sparks their creativity and intellectual development. Denying access to reputable news sources like The New York Times does a disservice to our education system and limits students' potential to grow into well-rounded individuals.

I urge the educational authorities in Long Island And New York  to reconsider this restriction. It is vital for the holistic development of students that they are granted access to credible, unbiased news sources that aid their educational journey—especially in a time when misinformation is rampant and available at their fingertips.

Unblocking The New York Times on school Chromebooks is not just a matter of convenience; it is about prioritizing the educational and moral growth of our youth. Let's come together to make this important change and ensure that our students have the resources they need to succeed. The New York Times further provides an educational source of games improving overall intellectual health in adolescents.

Please sign this petition to support the unblocking of The New York Times on school Chromebooks and make a positive impact on our students' education and future. Thank you for your support.
