The Issue

I used to listen to music in class every day, and it played a significant role in enhancing my focus and improving my overall performance at school. Music has this unique ability to calm the mind and create an environment where students like me can stay engaged and productive. However, a sudden decision to block YouTube and other music streaming platforms in the Beaverton School District has disrupted this essential part of my learning routine. As a result, I've noticed a decline in my grades and my ability to concentrate, which clearly illustrates the negative impact of this decision not just on me, but on countless other students who rely on music as a learning aid.

Music is not just a source of entertainment; it's a proven tool for enhancing cognitive performance and emotional well-being. Studies have shown that listening to music can reduce stress, improve mood, and even increase the efficiency of learning. According to research published in the Journal of Educational Psychology, students who listened to music in the background scored significantly higher in both academic performance and engagement levels.

By restricting access to music websites, the Beaverton School District is inadvertently hindering students’ ability to succeed. Imagine walking into a classroom filled with stressed and disengaged students who are struggling to keep up with the demands of their coursework, simply because they’ve been cut off from a tool that was helping them succeed.

We understand the concerns related to inappropriate content on these platforms, and a blanket ban might seem like a quick fix. However, there are alternative solutions that can address these concerns without sacrificing the academic and psychological benefits music provides. Implementing content filters, allowing access to educational playlists, or even integrating music into learning apps are viable strategies that balance safety with academic needs.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a call for the Beaverton School District to rethink its decision and reinstate access to music websites. Let’s work together to create a beneficial learning environment that embraces the diverse needs of all students. Your signature can make a difference. Please sign and help us restore a vital tool for learning.
