Over 27,000 signatures! It’s amazing! It's a shame that Mr. Alghabara, Guilbaul and Rainville didn't follow up yet. Seeing their lack of interest towards our mobilization, I propose to move to a new step.
The Monarchs' Field is a precious place. It is part of a set of green spaces totaling 215 interdependent hectares, which serve as a refuge for a nature increasingly under pressure. Not one square inch of this ecosystem should be on the "for lease" land market (See the picture I took near the Monarque Field last week).
There is a specific procedure to present a petition to the House of Commons. The Change.org petition does not meet the criteria for acceptance. I am convinced that bringing the issue to the House of Representatives is the best way to get our ministers out of their lethargy.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart for following me in this new offensive and for signing the Federal Petition . Follow the link to learn more about the concept of a National Urban Park . Since I was only allowed 250 words, it was impossible to make a bilingual petition. Please find below a translation of the federal petition for those who have difficulty reading French:
Petition to the Government of Canada
Whereas:
- This summer, Montreal Airport razed more than 4000 milkweeds in the "Monarch Field", an area known for its biodiversity, located in a 155-hectare federally owned area for which ADM is responsible for managing. This action provoked widespread outrage and a media outcry;
- The Monarch butterfly is a designated species at risk in Canada, under the Species at Risk Act. The government website states that the government "manages its federal properties...to provide critical habitat for the migration of the monarch. Milkweed is critical to the survival of the Monarch;
- The area is also a refuge for 193 bird species, including 14 species at risk and 33 species identified as "priority" by Environment Canada.
These lands are part of a 215-hectare ecosystem that helps protect biodiversity, support resilience to climate change and connect people to nature.
We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada,
urge the Government of Canada to vote to amend the ADM lease and ensure responsible management of the federally owned area. And to work in collaboration with Parks Canada, Dorval, Montreal, ADM, the landowners concerned, as well as the Aboriginal peoples of this unceded territory, in order to make the undeveloped spaces between the Technopark and ADM (Monarch Fields, green spaces, wetlands, etc.) the second National Urban Park of Canada. We thank the government for hearing our voices and hoping for concrete and rapid action on this issue.
