UMC Petition to Stand Against Hate and Take Action for Immigrant Rights
The Issue
At this critical moment in our nation's history, we, the undersigned, urge all United Methodists and people of conscience to take a bold stand against hate and advocate for the dignity, rights, and protection of immigrants who face daily fear, harassment, and trauma due to marginalization and violence.
We believe that all people, regardless of origin or legal status, deserve to live free from fear and be welcomed with compassion and respect. We must ensure that immigrants feel safe and supported in our communities.
We call upon churches, community leaders, and policymakers to unite in compassion, reject xenophobia, and champion the rights of migrants in the United States. We cannot stand idly by as our immigrant brothers and sisters face discrimination, fear, and uncertainty. We can create a nation where immigrants are welcomed, valued, and supported.
As signatories to this petition, we commit to taking the following actions:
Reach out to immigrant neighbors and fellow church members to express solidarity and care and offer support.
Listening to their experiences and needs is critical during these challenging times.
Welcome new immigrants into our congregations and communities with open hearts and hands, providing them with the care and support they deserve.
Support or begin English as a Second Language (ESL) classes as part of our ministry to migrant communities. We also advocate for expanded federal and state support for ESL programs to help immigrants integrate into their new communities.
Advocate for just and humane immigration policies that uphold the civil and human rights of all migrants. We demand legislative action to provide undocumented immigrants with a path to legal status and protections for those who will arrive in the future.
