UK high-street stores need to standardise clothing sizes

UK high-street stores need to standardise clothing sizes
The Issue
Journalist and body image activist Mollie Quirk, has launched a petition to call standardised sizing guidelines to be enforced across all UK clothing retailers.
With clothes sizes in UK clothing stores differing within stores and from store-to-store, women all over the country are developing poor mental health as a result.
Mollie conducted an investigation that spanned across two years – speaking to women and those who have encountered issues with the sizing on UK high-streets. Seeing inconsistency and sizing discrepancies crop up in almost every conversation, Mollie believes a real change needs to be made.
The UK government needs to team up with the fashion and retail industry in order to make a real change. Women in the UK are calling for you to enforce standardised sizing regulations that all UK clothing retailers must follow in order to trade.
Originally this petition was published on the Government petition website, but they rejected it, saying: "The Government aren't responsible for regulating the size of clothes, which is a matter for individual retailers."
After an entire month of hunting out options and discussing with a contact of the government, Mollie decided to start this petition on Change.org in order to put pressure on the UK government, Women and Equalities Committee, British Fashion Council and other regulatory bodies that are involved with fashion and retail in the UK.
As a size 16/18, Mollie has experienced countless problems with sizing on the UK high-street. She wants to make a REAL change and can only do that with YOUR help.
A nursing student broke down while out shopping for new clothes because she had to size up multiple sizes, "I had a complete breakdown and left the store in tears." There are countless stories from women across the country, all of which end in a similar way – with tears and no change.
Speaking to 200 women, 95% agree sizing is an issue in the UK.
The government needs to enforce regulations that UK clothing retailers must follow – this would improve the mental health of millions of women.
This petition is in collaboration with Models of Diversity.
