The UK must recognise the democratic Government of Myanmar

The Issue

The UK must recognise the government made up of lawmakers elected in 2020. They were ousted in a coup by a military junta, since when the junta has mounted what the UN calls "a brute force terror campaign" that has reportedly left over 1,500 people dead.

However, the UK has refused to recognise the ousted democratic government, in spite of the fact that the UK and all its major allies condemned the coup and imposed sanctions on the junta. At the UN the UK was instrumental in securing a huge majority in the General Assembly for a resolution calling for the restoration of democracy and a Security Council statement calling for the upholding of "democratic institutions and processes". Moreover, the UNGA has voted to reject the junta's credentials. As an influential member of the UN and former colonial power, the UK must take a strong lead.

Recognition builds on all the above but, moreover, it is an important act of solidarity with the people of Myanmar. Signing this petition could change the UK's approach, which in turn might impact the situation on the ground and it will indicate that you care about the people of Myanmar who have endured untold suffering.
