Let's get Raheem on a Sterling
The Issue
During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, while Brexit was laying bare some of the more unsavory elements of British society - flourished an England football team built on everything that is Great about Britain. Young, diverse, dynamic and completely at ease with themselves and the nation they were representing. Showcasing England to the world - and unifying the country - in a way that their politicians could only dream of.
At the heart of this was a 24 year-old, from the St Raphael’s Estate in North West London, Raheem Sterling. Who since that summer of love has transcended his performances on the pitch, by becoming an eloquent spokesperson - against racism in stadiums and within the pages of the nations tabloid newspapers.
For years Raheem has been the focus of a vitriolic obsession by the media. Having had his personal life and lifestyle choices picked over in a manner that has given off more than a whiff of classism and racial prejudice. In response, Sterling has been a passionate and articulate voice demanding balance in how young black athletes are portrayed, fighting lazy stereotypes and outlining the rank hypocrisy of those same media outlets who insist racism in football is confined to terraces of young distant nations in the former Soviet Union. As if.
To honor Raheem Sterling for using his voice against injustice, Lack of Guidance and FBB got together to try and do the unthinkable: Getting Raheem on an actual Sterling bank note. Having your face put on a bank note is considered one of the highest honors one can get in a country. Since Raheem has become a symbol for speaking up against racism in football, Lack of Guidance and FBB believe it’s only right to start a petition to try and make this happen.
